Christ, our Savior, endured pain up to the cross for us so we can join His flock, the sheep which are on His right hand side (Mt 25: 34) and which He would carry joyfully on His shoulders (Lk 15: 5) It was, indeed, an internecine war against our adversary in which our Lord’s victory was decisive: “having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it (the cross)” (3)

The Devil’s main plan, from the beginning, is to make us doubt God’s word and His love. He told our first parents: “You will not surely die (Meaning, the Lord lied to you!) For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be open, and you will be like God (Meaning, God is not planning to be good to you!)” (4) This enemy, being stubborn and spiteful, did not put down his weapon after his miserable defeat by the cross, but is still trying hard to make us doubt God’s word and His glorious promise; consequently, every one who listens to this adversary and follows his counsel would have “trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace” (5)

Doubting God’s teachings and deviating from the church theology constitutes a heresy. Our adversary uses heresies to dissociate us from our Savior’s way and causes us to lose our eternity. Examples of those heresies are the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Mormons, the Adventists, etc. But the most dangerous and most hideous of them is the New Age Cult. Probably the reason for this being that all other cults command their followers to avoid certain immoral behaviors such as fornication and theft, while the New Age Cult teaches that “if it feels good it is good.” They totally deny the existence of sin and, consequently of its eternal punishment. They say that God, if He exists, cannot be so cruel as to burn His creation in hell for their deeds. They also teach their followers (especially the teenagers) that, because of their deity-human nature, they should be leaders, not followers, and thus they should not obey their parents or teachers or the government of their country.

The “New Age” movement may be identified briefly as a concerted effort on the part of otherwise dissimilar people to abolish God totally as a distinct reality, and replace Him with humanity. Thus, this cult appears to be a mass of confusing and contradictory beliefs and practices unless it is understood clearly that it has two distinct expressions of the movement, the Occultism (Reincarnation, Crystal Power, Channeling Spirit Guides, Extraterrestrials,) and the Humanism (self-worship, Pantheism). Buddhists like to say that our concepts are like rafts that carry us across the river; once across the water, however, we abandon the rafts and continue the journey by walking. The “enlightened” one no longer thinks about an object called God; he stands above all viewpoints and simply experiences God.

Sadly, the majority of the American entertainers, and some of the media hosts, are strong advocates for, and eager believers of cultic movements, especially the “New Age.” We heard about Shirley McLain flying around the moon, and a woman in Washington who spoke with a 35 thousand-year-old voice. We often hear about New Age music (John Lennon, Yanni), and we know that the late Robert Duffy (Dallas) was a devoted Buddhist, that John Travolta and Tom Cruise belong to the Scientology cult. What many do not know is that Oprah Winfrey, the most influential talk-show host on American television, is the newest preacher for the New Age cult.

The Lord ordered His people, before they entered to their promised inheritance, saying: “There shall not be found among you anyone who … practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord.” (6) How fearful is it, then, to intentionally follow the teachings of these blasphemers! Acts of superstition, or future-telling or looking at your horoscope, are serious abominations to the Lord, i.e. acts that God hates; besides, by doing them we are bad examples to our children: “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (7)
